international days of action

September 28th is the international day of action for the decriminalisation of abortion

All over the world NGOs, health professionals, human rights defenders and activists mark this day with actions including: #Tweetathons; promoting abortion hotlines and publicising local services; public protests and demonstrations; public meetings and meetings of health professionals; publishing reports on abortion; fundraising parties; media and cultural events.

This year RHM is participating in the Festival of Choice in London – a series of 28th September events including meetings, film screenings, an interactive drama piece and a direct action. On Thursday 25th RHM Editor, Marge Berer, will join a panel discussion, speaking about abortion law and access in Europe. Other speakers from Amnesty International and the Central American Women’s Network will be addressing the impact of the criminal law on women in El Salvador.

September 28th supported by the International Campaign for Women's Right to Safe Abortion

Supporting and promoting activities marking the 28th September is one role of the international campaign. In 2012 and 2013 the campaign collated reports on the diverse actions that took place around the world.

The International Campaign for Women's Right to Safe Abortion was founded in May 2012 with two key aims:

  • To build an international campaign to promote universal access to safe, legal abortion as a women’s health and human rights issue.
  • To support women’s autonomy to make their own decisions whether and when to have children and have access to the means of acting on those decisions without risk to their health and lives.
